Welcome To Susquehanna Hose Company

The Susquehanna Hose Company is responsible for the fire protection services for the City of Havre De Grace, Maryland. Havre De Grace is located along the Susquehanna River as it enters into the Chesapeake Bay. The City of Havre De Grace has a population of around 16 thousand people and is famous for its waterfront, decoys, and the Concord Point Lighthouse. The Susquehanna Hose Company consists of five firehouses that operate 5 Engines, Tower, Rescue, Mini-Pumper, 3 Boats, Dive Unit, Swift Water Unit and 4 Utility Vehicles. The Hose Company has responded to each and every call alerted for over the last several decades and is known as "The Fastest Volunteers in the Nation" because of its extremely fast response times. The Susquehanna Hose Company consistently responds 7-8 pieces of fire apparatus on calls. We pride ourselves on our dedication to the citizens of Havre De Grace.

SNOW FALL BRINGS ONE IN TO THE CREEK

On Saturday at 1449 hours, the Hose Company and Company 5-9 were alerted for the 10-50 PI at the intersection of Pulaski Highway & Blenheim Farm Lane, in the 542 box area.  Chief 5, Engine 512 (w/4), Engine 513 (w/5) and Quint 5 marked up immediately after alert.  Dispatch advised all units that the Havre de Grace Police were on scene to the rear of the M&T Bank with a single vehicle 10-50.  Engine 512 (Lamana) was first to arrive at 1455 hours with one off the roadway and advised the patient had self extricated.  Command then scaled back to Engine 512 & Engine 513.  Crews checked for hazards, which proved negative and cleared at the time of patient transport.  Chief 5 (Hurst) held the "Blenheim Farm Lane" command.


 
   
   
PASSING OF PAST CHIEF ED ROSENKRANS

It is with deep regret that the Susquehanna Hose Company Officers and Members announce the passing of former Chief Ed Rosenkrans on Thursday, January 28th, 2010.  Ed served as Chief of the Hose Company from 1981 to 1982.

Respect may be paid on Sunday, January 31st from 1700 hours to 2000 hours at the Zellman Funeral Home in Havre de Grace (Washington Street).  A Fire Department Memorial Service will be held at 1900 hours. 

Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 1st at 1000 hours at the Zellman Funeral Home.  A fire department procession will follow, passing the Number 4 firehouse for a final call.  The procession will then proceed to Harford Memorial Gardens on Aldino Road.

TOWER 5 AND THE SECOND ASSISTANT ON THE SECOND ALARM BEL AIR APARTMENT

On Saturday at approximately 0030 hours, the Hose Company was alerted for Tower 5 as part of the second alarm apartment fire assignment for 102 Seevue Court, in the 301 box area.  Tower 5 (w/4, Forton) and Chief 5-2 marked up shortly after alert.  Chief 3 (Snyder) was first to arrive with heavy fire showing from a three story garden style apartment building and requested the second alarm.  Upon arrival, Tower 5 was instructed to conduct vertical ventilation and then was instructed to open up division three.  Crews operated until approximately 0515 hours then cleared.  Chief 3 (Snyder) held the "Seevue Court" command.


 
   
   
DECEMBER FIREFIGHTER OF THE MONTH

Firefighter Ed Grainger is being recognized as the Hose Company Firefighter of the Month for December, 2009.  Ed is being recognized for his work on the annual Duck Drop at the Havre de Grace New Years celebration.  Once again, the Duck Drop was a huge hit and we look forward to seeing it kick off 2011.  Ed will be recognized at the upcoming City Council Meeting.  Congrats!


 
ENGINE 512 ON THE NORTH EAST HOUSE TRAILER

On Wednesday at 1430 hours, the Hose Company was alerted for an Engine to relocate to Cecil County Station 4, while their units were working on a house trailer fire.  Engine 512 (w 6, Goll) marked up immediately after alert.  Just after crossing The Hatem Bridge, command requested Engine 512 to make their response to the scene.  Engine 512 arrived 409 Champlain Road shortly after and went to work.  Engine 512's crew conducted a search, ventilated, extinguished and conducted overhaul. Crews remained on scene until approximately 1630 hours and then cleared.  Captain 4 (Douglas) held the "Champlain Road" command.

DUMPSTER FIRE TO THE REAR OF PEPSI

On Thursday at 2350 hours, the Hose Company was alerted for the dumpster fire to the rear of the Pepsi Plant, at 1300 Post Road.  Chief 5-1, Chief 5-2, Engine 512 (w/6) and Engine 514 marked up shortly after alert.  Chief 5-1 and Engine 512 were first to arrive at 2354 hours with smoke showing from the dumpster and quickly went to work, deploying a 1 3/4" handline.  The fire was knocked quickly and crews cleared at 0016 hours.  Chief 5-1 (Carroll) held the "Post Road" command.


 
   
   
NEW MEMBER OF THE FAMILY

The Susquehanna Hose Company Officers and Members are proud to welcome the newest member of the family, Charlotte Elizabeth Denbow.  Jeff and Lori welcomed their new addition on Wednesday morning at 0355 hours.  Charlotte weighed in at 5 lbs 1/2 oz and measured 17 and 3/4 inches.  Mom, Dad and Baby are all doing well and are expected to be home sometime this weekend.  Congrats guys!!

The Officers and Members of the Susquehanna Hose Company would like to extend a Happy New Year to our community and surrounding areas.  It was another great New Years Eve with the annual Havre de Grace Duck Drop at the Middle School and we would like to thank all those who attended.


 
   
   
THREE ENGINES AND THE TOWER ON THE PERRYVILLE HOUSE

On Friday at 1028 hours, Engine 512 & Tower 5 were alerted as part of the Cecil County 600 box alarm for the reported house fire at 807 Broad Street.  Engine 512 (w/6 Lamana) and Tower 5 (w/6, Walsh) marked up shortly after alert.  Assistant Chief 6-1 was first to arrive at 1033 hours with smoke showing from a 3 story, balloon frame, duplex.  Engine 512 arrived as the 3rd due Engine and was advised by command to throw ladders to the dwelling and establish a RIT team on side delta.  Tower 5 arrived as the 2nd due truck and was advised by command to make entry and begin opening up.  At 1043 hours, Engine 513 (w/7, Reeder) was requested by command to make their response to the scene and Engine 515 (w/6, Pentz) was advised to relocate to Cecil County Station 11.  Engine 515 eventually made their response to the scene at 1128 hours, at the request of command.  Heavy fire was found in the basement, with extension to divisions one and two.  Hose Company crews conducted multiple tasks, which included extinguishing the fire, search, overhaul and venting.  Hose Company crews were on scene until 1334 hours and then returned to Havre de Grace.  Chief 6 (Ryan) held the "Broad Street" command. 

Also during this time, Engine 514 & Quint 5 remained attended in town.


 
   
   
FIRST DUE BOX TO CLOSE OUT THE YEAR
Thursday, December 31, 2009

On Thursday at 0646 hours, the 553 box alarm was struck for 232 Spectacular Bid Drive, bringing the Hose Company and E213.  Chief 5-1, Chief 5-2, Engine 511 (w/3), Engine 512 (w/6), Engine 513, Engine 514, Engine 515 (w/3), Quint 5 (w/8) and Tower 5 (w/3) marked up shortly after alert.  Dispatch advised all units that they received a report from the homeowner that that house was filling with smoke.  Quint 5 was first to arrive at 0655 hours, Captain 5-5 (Hurst) established the "Spectacular Bid Drive" command and advised he had nothing showing from the alpha side of a two story single family.  Shortly after arrival, command advised he had smoke in the dwelling and called for the Working Fire Dispatch, bringing Engine 113 and Medic 592.  Remaining units arrived shortly after and after further investigation, found the source of the smoke to be a furnace malfunction.  Crews set up positive pressure ventilation and then cleared after the house was vented.  Chief 5-1 (Carroll) held the "Spectacular Bid Drive" command.


 
   
   
DOOR POP ON THE AVENUE

On Wednesday at 1132 hours, the Hose Company and Company 5-9 were alerted for the 10-50 PI in the 300 block of South Union Avenue.  Deputy Chief 5, Chief 5-2, Engine 512 (w/5, Lamana) and Rescue 5 (w/5, Carroll) marked up shortly after alert.  Chief 5-2 was first to arrive at 1135 hours with a two vehicle MVA, advised he had one trapped and requested the Rescue Assignment.  Engine 512's crew quickly created a purchase point on the driver's door with a bar and began popping the door with Rescue 5's combi-tool.  Extrication was completed quickly and the patient was then loaded in Paramedic 591.  Hose Company crews remained on scene until the patient was transported and then cleared.  Deputy Chief 5 (Packard) held the "South Union Avenue" command.


 
   
   
ENGINE 512 ON THE 3 ALARM CHURCH FIRE IN 8'S FIRST DUE

On Wednesday at 1125 hours, the Hose Company was alerted for two Engines as part of the 3rd alarm assignment for the Church fire at 540 Joppa Farm Road, in the 818 box area.  Engine 512 (w/6, Goll) marked up immediately after alert and Engine 514 (w/6, Allers) marked up shortly after alert.  While enroute, command advised Engine 512 to report to the scene and Engine 514 to relocate to Company 4 House 1.  Engine 512 arrived at 1148 hours and was instructed by command to conduct extensive overhaul operations.  Engine 512's crew worked until 1311 hours and then cleared.  Chief 8-1 (Petersen) held the "Joppa Farm Road" command.

TWO VEHICLE MVA AT PULASKI AND LEWIS LANE

On Tuesday at 1042 hours, the Hose Company and Company 5-9 were alerted for the 10-50 PI at the intersection of Pulaski Highway and Lewis Lane.  Deputy Chief 5, Engine 512, Engine 513, Rescue and Tower 5 marked up shortly after alert.  Deputy Chief 5 was first to arrive at 1044 hours with a two vehicle MVA and one patient.  Rescue 5 and Engine 512 were next to arrive, at which point command scaled back to units on the scene.  Crews established patient care and put a minor spill in check before clearing.  Deputy Chief 5 (Packard) held the "Pulaski Highway" command.


 
   
   
SHCO RESCUES TWO FROM THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AFTER BOATING ACCIDENT

On Sunday December 6 around 14:30 hrs, the Susquehanna Hose Company was alerted for Rescue Box 570 South for two subjects in the water.  Chief 5, Chief 5-1, Chief 5-2, Rescue 551, Utility 571 with Marine 552 all went enroute within minutes.  Perry Point Marine 11 and Aberdeen Proving Ground Marine 12 also went enroute.  Units were advised there was one subject in the water with a lifevest on and another patient on the boat.  The vessel was apparently involved in a boating accident.  Chief 5-2 was first to arrive and had a visual of a boat with one subject in the water and one on the vessel.  Chief 5 arrived along with Marine 552 and established the command at Tydings Park.  Chief 5-2 maintained a visual on the vessel from the Bayou Apartments.  Ambulance 591 and 591 arrived and Chief 5 advised one medic to board Marine 552.  Within minutes of the original call, Marine 552 was launched and enroute to the vessel.  Marine 552 arrived on the scene and immediately pulled the subject from the water and began patient care while enroute back to Tydings Park.  The second subject also boarded Marine 552.  Command advised Medic 591 and 592 to relocate to the fuel pier to meet Marine 552 due to the fact in was much quicker and the subject was suffering traumatic injuries along with being in the cold water for 25 minutes.  Marine 552 arrived and was assisted by the crew of Rescue 551 with getting the patient from off the Marine unit to Medic 591.  The Medic unit immediately went enroute to Harford Memorial Hospital while the second subject was transported to Bayview Trauma by Medic 592.  The crew of Marine 552 and Medics 591-592 should be commended on their life saving efforts.  Marine 552 crew consisted of U571 operator Lt. Keith Beckley, Marine 552 operator Bay Wettig, Firefighters Jim Miller and Allen Dinnan.  Great job done by all.
